Grants and Scholarships

The bulk of the federal aid programs available to students is comprised of the Federal Pell Grant. This grant is generally awarded to undergraduate students who have yet to receive a bachelor’s degree. In limited cases, however, students may receive the grant if he or she is enrolled in specific teacher certification programs. The maximum grant amount changes annually.

A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. As previously mentioned, grants are only awarded to undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or a professional degree and, also, to those students who have not yet exceeded the Lifetime Eligibility Used (LEU), which is the equivalent of six years, as defined by the U.S. Department of Education.

In order to determine the student’s eligibility, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the information provided in each student’s application. This formula calculates the Expected Family Contribution (EFC). This index number, which is found on the upper right corner of the Student Aid Report’s (SAR) first page, is used to determine the grant amount awarded received by each student. This amount is subject to the cost of enrollment which is calculated in accordance with the student’s course load.

Currently, the student may only receive the Federal Pell Grant during an academic year. The grant award depends not only on the EFC, but on the cost of attending the educational institution, as well. The award will also depend on whether the student is attending school part- or full-time or if the student has attended another educational institution during the same academic year. The student may not receive the Federal Pell Grant in more than one institution at a time.

This grant will only pay retroactively for those credits completed by the student. It will not pay for courses which the student failed to attend or courses which the student has withdrawn from. The Federal Pell Grant will only cover those credits conducive to his or her degree.
 

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) program is a grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need. That is, students with a low Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Priority is given to students receiving Federal Pell Grants.
The FSEOG grant award ranges between $100 and $4,000 per year. The grant award will depend on the student’s needs, availability of funds in the Institution, and the student’s compliance with the eligibility requirements established by federal regulations as well as with the Institution’s policies regarding the award of assistance (Política Institucional de Otorgamiento de Ayudas.)

The Puerto Rican Government provides the funds for this program. The eligibility requirements for this program are governed by the U.S. Department of Education’s regulations applicable to Title IV funds. Students must comply with the financial need requirements established by the Institution. These funds may be awarded to both undergraduate and graduate students.
 

The funds assigned to this program will be used first and foremost to assist newly enrolled students with a high school GPA of 3.00 or higher who graduated from high school the year directly before the scholarship is to awarded. Additionally, students must be enrolled full-time at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico.
After addressing the financial needs of said students, the funds may be used to award assistance to non-first year students who maintain the above mentioned average and enrollment status.
These funds will be awarded by the Institution and disbursed through checks issued by the Puerto Rico Council on Higher Education.
 

The purpose of this State scholarship is to assist full-time, undergraduate Honor students in financing the costs of education not covered by other financial aid, in accordance to the financial need of each student.
To qualify, students must maintain a GPA of 3.75 or higher, be enrolled in the third or fourth year of their bachelor’s degree, and be a student of the Inter American University.
 

The purpose of this scholarship program is to assist undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need and who are enrolled in specific academic fields identified by the Puerto Rico Council on Higher Education as important for the development of Puerto Rico. Students enrolled in technical programs may also qualify. Students should have a GPA of 3.50 or higher.
 

The University assigns institutional funds each year to grant students with financial need scholarships. The funds are also used to address special circumstances demonstrated by students.
 

The Honors Program at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico is aimed at assisting academically talented, undergraduate students in achieving their maximum development. Interested students may learn more about this program in the General Catalog, by accessing www.inter.edu, or in their campus.
Admission to the Honors Program entails an award of an honors scholarship, in accordance to the following criteria:
1. First Year Students:
Level I – Basic Scholarship: For eligible candidates with an admissions index of 1,250 to 1,339.
Level II – Superior Scholarship: For eligible candidates with an admissions index of 1,340 to 1,384.
Level III – Extraordinary Scholarship: For eligible candidates with an admissions index of 1,385 to 1,600.
2. Second and Third Year Students:
Level I – Basic Scholarship: For eligible students with a GPA of 3.50 to 3.79.
Level II – Superior Scholarship: For eligible students with a GPA of 3.80 to 3.90.
Level III – Extraordinary Scholarship: For eligible students with a GPA of 3.91 to 4.00.
3. The honors scholarship awarded in each category is the following:
Level I – Basic Scholarship: Payment of tuition for a course affiliated with the Honors Program, each semester.
Level II – Superior Scholarship: Payment of tuition for an honors course and payment of half of the tuition in the remainder of the enrolled courses, each semester, excluding the general and incidental fees.
Level III – Extraordinary Scholarship: Payment of the totality of the tuition, each semester, excluding the general and incidental fees.
 

Funds provided by the University to assist in recruiting talented students in this field. The scholarship is granted for a maximum of 5 years.
Specific requirements:
1. High School diploma with a GPA of at least 2.75.
2. Obtain a score of at least 1,250 on the College Board’s Evaluation for University Admissions Exam (on the English, Mathematics, and Spanish Achievement exams)
3. Be a full-time student at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico.
4. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher during your studies as well as a Satisfactory Academic Progress.
 

The Inter American University of Puerto Rico assigns funds annually to Athletic Scholarships for eligible students, in accordance to the following criteria:
1. Be a full-time student at the Inter American University of Puerto Rico.
2. Demonstrate outstanding athletic ability, as determined by the Athletics Department.
3. Maintain satisfactory academic progress, in accordance to the establish standards.
 

This scholarship is granted to students demonstrating exceptional academic achievement. Cases are referred the Office of the President, which then selects candidates to receive the scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to cover up to 100% of the student’s enrollment costs not covered by any other financial aid. This scholarship is not granted automatically and requires the verification of the GPA each semester.
 

• Funds assigned to pay the equivalent of one credit, or the amount determined by the campus.
• Participating students who obtain an A or B in these courses are eligible.
• The University evaluates students each semester after the approval of these courses.

Scholarship program available to students enrolled in the Nursing Program (Bachelor’s or Associate Programs) demonstrating exceptional financial need and who have a course load of at least twelve credits. The students must maintain enrollment of at least twelve credits, approve all course, and maintain academic progress with a GPA of at least 2.00. Interested students should provide financial information for their parents and their parent’s family group, even if they are no longer dependents. This information is used to determine the poverty level, as defined by the U.S. Department of Health, which is one of the criteria to determine the eligibility of the students.
